Dear Cllr Naylor
Re: Council Housing Sell-Offs
We write in response to an article which appeared in the CNJ (Council homes sell-offs ‘an option’) and also in response to the CASP Committee meeting you attended on January 29th 2007.
The CASP Committee now wishes to make its position absolutely clear regarding the above issue.
The CASP Committee is opposed to any selling off of street properties or housing estates to housing associations or on the open market.
CASP demands adequate government funding of council housing, which was clearly available if the ALMO had been accepted, to safeguard public housing with democratic accountability.
Many of our street properties have provided homes to generations of families over the years, however, the current administration’s plans to sell these properties and others if direct funding is not forthcoming is, in our view, completely unacceptable.
CASP demands a commitment by the present administration that there will be no PFI, stock transfer, or other sale of council housing, especially as the tenants and residents of Camden have already made their voices heard on the issue.
After speaking with you at the meeting it also became clear that there is an urgent need for an improved dialogue between Cllrs, tenants and residents.
Therefore we formally propose:
A meeting with our members and yourself to discuss the way forward and how we can work more constructively together to place pressure on central government to release much needed funding;
A joint delegation of Cllrs, tenants and residents to the Housing Minister;
That the Council commit some serious resources to open public lobbying on this issue.
We hope this makes the Association’s position absolutely clear on the issue
We look forward to hearing from you shortly.
Yours sincerely,
The Camden Association of Street Properties Committee.
